Warren L. Grayson is the Morton F. Goldberg Professor and Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, where he also directs the Translational Tissue Engineering Center. He holds affiliations with the Institute for Basic Biomedical Science and the Translational Tissue Engineering Center. His research focuses on engineering functional craniofacial and orthopaedic tissues using stem cells, biomaterials, 3D printing, and bioreactors to address challenges in regenerative medicine. Key interests include spatio-temporal control of stem cell fate, bioreactor design for large tissue constructs, and the integration of biophysical cues to guide tissue development.
Grayson earned his BS in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of the West Indies (1998), followed by a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Florida State University (2005). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University (2005–2009). His work has led to innovations in oxygen-releasing scaffolds, vascularized tissue engineering, and computational modeling of tissue regeneration. He has been instrumental in advancing imaging techniques to study neurovascular architecture and tissue microenvironments.
Grayson’s research has been recognized through significant collaborations, including leadership in the ARISE Alliance for faculty diversity initiatives and participation in NIH-funded projects. His lab emphasizes translational approaches, aiming to bridge basic science and clinical applications in tissue regeneration. Current projects include Volumetric Muscle Loss (VML) repair, personalized bone grafts, and the development of bioreactors for functional tissue preservation.
His publications highlight advancements in biomaterials, 3D printing, and stem cell therapies, with a focus on osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and the integration of engineered tissues into living systems. Clinical applications span bone regeneration, muscle repair, and the creation of in vitro disease models for translational research.
