Warren Kinghorn is the Esther Colliflower Professor of the Practice of Pastoral and Moral Theology at Duke Divinity School and a Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center. He co-directs the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative and serves as a staff psychiatrist at the Durham VA Medical Center. His work bridges Christian theology with mental health care, focusing on religious communities' roles in mental health, moral injury, and the ethical dimensions of psychiatric practice.
Kinghorn holds an M.D. from Harvard University and a Th.D. from Duke Divinity School. His research explores the intersections of faith, medicine, and ethics, including combat trauma, the moral context of diagnosis, and St. Thomas Aquinas' philosophical contributions to care practices.
Recent publications include Wayfaring: A Christian Approach to Mental Health Care (2024) and articles addressing suicide prevention ethics and theological critiques of medicalized control. He teaches courses on theology and trauma, Christian mental health approaches, and healthcare ethics.
Kinghorn actively engages public discourse, responding to controversial statements about mental health (e.g., John MacArthur’s critiques) and advocating for holistic, faith-informed care. His work emphasizes community belonging and the church’s role in supporting those in psychological crisis.
