Warren C. Schultz is a Professor of History at DePaul University's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, specializing in Medieval Islamic history with particular focus on the Mamluk Sultanate (1250-1517 CE), the Crusades, and numismatic studies. Holding a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1995), he maintains an active research program integrating literary, archaeological, numismatic, and material culture sources to reconstruct the economic and social history of medieval Egypt and Syria.
Dr. Schultz's research centers on the monetary history of the Mamluk Sultanate, examining coinage systems, metrology, and economic structures through interdisciplinary methodologies. His work bridges numismatic evidence with textual analysis and archaeological findings, notably demonstrated in his monograph Numismatic Nights: Gold, Silver and Copper Coins in the Mahdi A Manuscript of Alf Layla wa-Layla (2015). Current research includes analysis of Mamluk dirham hoards, glass weights, and the integration of archaeological data from sites like Tall Hisban in Jordan to understand medieval urban and rural economies.
His scholarly contributions reveal consistent focus on three interconnected domains: Mamluk monetary systems (particularly fulūs and dirhams), Crusades-era cross-cultural interactions, and material culture studies of the medieval Islamic world. Recent publications demonstrate increasing integration of archaeological fieldwork with numismatic analysis, reflecting a broader trend toward interdisciplinary approaches in Islamic historical studies.
At DePaul University, Professor Schultz teaches undergraduate survey courses on Muslim world history alongside specialized seminars on Ibn Battuta, the Crusades, and The Thousand and One Nights. At the graduate level, he offers seminars on Crusades in World History and teaching methodologies for Islamic history. His academic service includes active participation in the university's History Department and College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, contributing to curriculum development and faculty governance.
