Warren Boutcher is a Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London's School of English and Drama. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he studied Florio’s translation of Montaigne under Lisa Jardine. With a career spanning over three decades, he has specialized in late Renaissance European studies, focusing on translation, humanism, intellectual history, and transnational literary phenomena. His research explores how literary objects traversed cultural and geographical boundaries, exemplified by his landmark two-volume work The School of Montaigne in Early Modern Europe (2017), praised for its interdisciplinary scope and global perspective. Boutcher has taught courses on Shakespeare, Renaissance literary culture, and drama, and supervised numerous PhD students in early modern studies. His current project seeks to map a literary history of Europe (1559–1648) through transnational networks and material objects. He has engaged with public audiences via BBC Newsnight and academic platforms, advocating for anthropological approaches to literary analysis. His work bridges textual scholarship with broader questions of cultural transmission, media history, and the dynamics of early modern intellectual communities.
