Dr. Wanliang Shan is an Associate Professor at Syracuse University's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, affiliated with the BioInspired Institute. His research focuses on Smart, Hybrid, Active, and Nature-inspired Materials, Mechanics, and Machines (SHAN 3M), emphasizing interdisciplinary design of soft multifunctional materials and robotic mechanisms. He teaches courses such as Introduction to Robotics, Soft Robotics, and Fracture Mechanics.
Education: Ph.D. in Engineering (Princeton University), B.E. in Materials Science (University of Science & Technology of China). Honors include the NSF Career Award (2023) and Magna Cum Laude distinction (2006).
Research interests span solid mechanics, materials engineering, and soft robotics, with a focus on tunable adhesion systems, soft robotics applications, and bioinspired designs. His work has been published in journals like Advanced Materials Interfaces and Extreme Mechanics Letters, supported by NSF, NASA, and Syracuse University.
