Dr. Walter Prevenier (1934–) is a renowned historian specializing in medieval and early modern Europe, particularly the Burgundian Netherlands. He held the position of Professor of History at Ghent University from 1967 until his retirement in 1999, later becoming Professor Emeritus. His academic journey includes a PhD from Ghent University (1962) and postgraduate studies in paleography and canon law at the École des Chartes and Sorbonne in Paris (1959–1960).
His research focuses on Burgundian social/cultural history, medieval historiography, and gender studies. He authored seminal works like The Burgundian Netherlands (1985) and Violence against Women in Fifteenth-Century France (1999). He has also published critical editions of medieval sources, including charters of Flanders' counts.
Prevenier’s honors include membership in the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences (1985), Academia Europea (1989), and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (1996). He served in leadership roles for academic institutions like the Commission Royale d'Histoire and the Commission Internationale de Diplomatique. His visiting professorships spanned institutions such as UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and Princeton.
