Walter Lukosz was Professor of Optics at ETH Zurich (1975-1998), pioneering research in integrated optics and nanophotonics. Discovered integrated-optical sensor principle (1983/84) leading to development of biosensors. Research encompassed optical bistability, waveguide holograms, and fluorescence near interfaces.
Developed novel integrated-optical devices including grating couplers, interferometers, and nanomechanical actuators for applications in modulators, microphones, and wavelength-tunable filters. Fellow of Optical Society of America. Lectured internationally including at International School of Electron Microscopy in Erice and Tohoku University.
Research Focus: Fundamental studies on influence of optical environment on spontaneous emission rates, integrated optical biosensors, and nano-electromechanical systems combining micromechanics with photonics.
