Walter E. Little is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Chair of the Department of Africana, Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies at the University at Albany, College of Arts and Sciences. His ethnographic research focuses on the intersection of political economy and cultural identity among Kaqchikel and K'iche' Maya communities in Guatemala and Mexico, examining issues such as artisan livelihoods in heritage sites, textile production, and collaborative projects with indigenous communities.
Little earned his PhD from the University of Illinois in 2001. He has curated the exhibit 'Desafiando la autenticidad. La computarización en la producción y consumo de textiles mayas de Guatemala' at the Museo Textil de Oaxaca (2024) and is co-authoring a forthcoming Kaqchikel Maya language textbook (Spring 2026). His work extends into public engagement, including serving as an expert witness in U.S. immigration cases and co-founding the Guatemalan Emergency Relief Fund post-Hurricane Stan (2005).
His research has been recognized with multiple awards, including the 2005 New England Council for Latin American Studies Best Book Award and the 2014 Society for the Anthropology of Work Best Book Award. He collaborates with the Triqui community in Albany, NY, through Triquis Sin Fronteras, and has hosted cultural festivals and educational initiatives since 2018.
