Sergio Francisco Romero is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, holding appointments in the Lozano-Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. He currently serves as LLILAS’s Associate Director for Indigenous Programs and is a Numerary Member of the Guatemalan Academy of Geography and History. His research focuses on language change, indigenous languages (K’iche’, Kaqchikel, Q’eqchi’, Ixil, Nahuatl), ethnicity, colonialism, and Maya migration to the U.S. He has held fellowships including the Alexander von Humboldt Experienced Fellow (2018–2021) and Fulbright US Scholar (2022).
His work bridges linguistics and anthropology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to language variation, ritual semiotics, and Mesoamerican Christianity. Upcoming publications include an annotated Spanish translation of the Memorial de Sololá (Kaqchikel), to be published in Guatemala City in 2024.
