Walter D. Ward is a Professor and Chair of the Department of History at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), housed within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on the Roman Near East, early Christianity, and early Islam, emphasizing cultural interactions during antiquity and the early medieval period. He holds a B.A./B.S. in History and Chemistry from North Carolina State University (NCSU), an M.A. in History from NCSU, and a Ph.D. in History from UCLA (2008).
His major publications include Mirage of the Saracen (2014, UC Press), awarded the Phi Alpha Theta Best First Book Prize, and Near Eastern Cities from Alexander to the Successors of Muhammad (2019, Routledge). He has also edited works like The Socio-economic History... (2017) and co-authored Sources of World Societies (2011). Ward’s fieldwork spans the Middle East, including excavations in Jordan.
Teaching specialties include ancient and medieval Middle Eastern history, and he maintains active archaeological research in the region. His career was inspired by early fieldwork at Aqaba, Jordan, during his undergraduate years.
