Walter Bisang is a Swiss linguist born in 1959, currently serving as a Full Professor (C4) of General and Comparative Linguistics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since October 1992. He has held visiting professorships at Zhejiang University, University of Hong Kong, and institutions in Paris, Bangkok, and Melbourne.
- Education: Studied General Linguistics (major), Chinese Language & Literature, and Georgian at the University of Zürich (1978-1986); PhD in General Linguistics (1990).
Research Focus spans cross-linguistic structural variation, with emphasis on:
- Areal/geographic clustering of grammatical properties
- Interaction between overt and hidden linguistic complexity
- Grammaticalization patterns
- Language contact and universals
His work integrates typology with sociocultural, cognitive, and physiological factors, analyzing languages from East/Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Caucasus. He leads the PLATO project examining how linguistic variation affects educational assessments.
