Walter Belardi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering and Architecture at the University of Parma, Italy. His research focuses on Specialty Optical Fibers (SOFs), particularly hollow-core and microstructured fibers, with groundbreaking contributions to high-capacity, low-latency optical communication systems.
- Laurea in Electronics Engineering, University of Pavia
- PhD in Optoelectronics, Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton
- University Degree in Business Management, IAE Caen, France (2022)
Prof. Belardi is a pioneer in hollow-core antiresonant optical fibers, notably conceiving and fabricating the nested anti-resonant nodeless fiber in 2013, now a leading candidate for next-generation optical transmission. His work extends to mid-infrared applications and simplified hollow-core fiber designs. He has contributed to over 100 scientific publications, patents, and conference papers.
His recent publications (2024) focus on inhibited-coupling hollow-core fibers for quantum entangled photons, thermal effects of yellow lasers in retinal therapy, and gas-filled hollow-core fibers. These works reflect strong trends in quantum photonics, biomedical optics, and advanced optical materials.
Prof. Belardi has secured over 2.5 M€ in research funding as principal or co-investigator and has served as a reviewer for top journals such as Nature Photonics, Optica, and Nature Communications. He has evaluated projects for the European Commission, EPSRC (UK), ANR (France), and other international agencies.
- Editor of a book on Hollow Core Optical Fibers
- Associate Editor, journal Fibers
- Chair, Annual Workshop on Microstructured Optical Fibers
- Committee Member, Conference Photoptics
He teaches courses such as Antennas for Wireless Systems, Applied Electromagnetism and Laboratory, and Optical and Photonic Sensors. He leads research in photonics and optical fiber innovation and has held leadership roles, including General Coordinator of the European Research Project GADEIRE and Excellence Research Chair at the University of Lille.
