Birkbeck , University of Londonمعرفی
Walter Beckert is Reader (Associate Professor) in Economics at Birkbeck Business School, Birkbeck, University of London, specialising in theoretical and applied econometrics, empirical industrial organisation and health economics. He additionally serves as Senior Advisor to the Prudential Regulation Authority at the Bank of England, Research Associate at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, member of the Academic Panel of the UK Competition & Markets Authority, and Associate at Oxera Consulting.
Education:
- PhD in Economics, University of California at Berkeley
Research Interests:
Beckert’s research integrates advanced econometric methods with problems in industrial organisation and public policy. Core themes include:
- Demand analysis and modelling of heterogeneous consumer choice, with emphasis on invertibility and identification of structural models.
- Spatial competition and product differentiation, analysing negotiated pricing and market power in oligopolistic markets.
- Health-care markets: patient choice, GP referral behaviour, impacts of private providers within the English NHS, and regulation of unhealthy-food promotions.
- Competition policy applications: empirical analysis of buyer power, countervailing power, merger assessment and market definition.
His methodological contributions cover specification testing in structural models, uniform convergence rates in parametric estimation, and honest inference for discrete outcomes in regression-discontinuity designs.
Recent Publication Trends:
Across the last 15 listed articles (2007-2025) Beckert consistently bridges high-level econometric theory with policy-relevant questions. Health-economics papers dominate the 2020-2023 period, investigating how pricing practices and provider choice architectures affect public-health outcomes. Industrial-organisation studies focus on spatial differentiation, bargaining power and consumer inertia, often employing sophisticated structural-estimation techniques. Theory pieces refine inference and specification testing, underpinning the empirical work.
Scientific Awards & Recognition:
- Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship, 2002-2003
- Listed among “the world’s leading competition economists”, Who’s Who Legal: Consulting Experts (since 2016)
Grants & Doctoral Supervision:
Beckert has attracted major UK ESRC funding as Principal or Co-Investigator, including the project “Empirical Analysis of Vertical Contracting in Intermediate Goods Markets” (£1.1 m, 2015-2018) and earlier work on firms’ strategic choices under demand uncertainty (2006-2007). Since 2013 he has successfully supervised at least four PhD students to completion at Birkbeck, serving as principal supervisor on topics ranging from health-econometric switching models to structural industrial-organisation research.
Editorial & Professional Service:
Co-Editor of The Manchester School (March 2018 – April 2024); referee and panel member for UK competition authorities; organiser of ESRC-funded academic conferences on vertical contracting and bargaining.
