Dr. Walid Issa is an Associate Professor in Power Electronics at Sheffield Hallam University's Department of Engineering and Mathematics, part of the College of Business, Technology and Engineering. He joined in 2016 and currently serves as the EDI Lead in Engineering. He holds a PhD in Renewable Energy from the University of Exeter (2015) and was a PDRA there (2014–2016). His research focuses on power electronics, smart grids, microgrids, and renewable energy integration, with emphasis on EVs and building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). He has secured grants including a €1m European fund (VEHICLE project) and Innovate UK funding. He is an IEEE Senior Member, EPSRC Full College Member, and guest editor for journals in energy systems.
His teaching includes leading modules in Power Electronics, Sustainable Energy, and Electrical Engineering. Research highlights include developing microgrid stability models, novel control strategies for inverters, and advanced BIPV systems. He has supervised 2 completed PhD students and 18 MSc students, with 3 current PhD candidates. His work on SiC MOSFETs and medium-voltage DC systems for EV charging reflects his innovation in power electronics.
Key contributions include a reduced-order microgrid model, participation factor analysis for controller selection, and BIPV thermal performance studies. His recent articles explore EV charging infrastructure, photovoltaic driver optimization, and semi-transparent PV integration in smart buildings. He actively reviews for IEEE Transactions and collaborates with institutions like the University of Exeter and INSA de Strasbourg.
