Wajahat Mehal, MD, DPhil, serves as Professor of Medicine in the Department of Digestive Diseases at Yale School of Medicine. He directs both the Yale Fatty Liver Disease Program and the Yale Metabolic Health and Weight Loss Program, with clinical expertise spanning obesity medicine, gastroenterology, and hepatology.
Dr. Mehal completed his medical education at University of Oxford (MD, 1990; DPhil, 1993), followed by residency at Yale New Haven Hospital (1996), and fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital (2001). His research focuses on liver inflammation, fibrosis, and immunology with specific emphasis on sterile inflammation pathways, hepatic stellate cell activation, and liver tolerance mechanisms.
His scientific contributions show a strong trajectory in understanding liver disease mechanisms, particularly in non-alcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver disease. Recent publications demonstrate expertise in translational research bridging basic science discoveries to clinical applications, with significant emphasis on inflammation pathways, metabolic liver disease, and novel therapeutic approaches for MASH (Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis).
- Fellow, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (2021)
Dr. Mehal maintains an active NIH-funded translational research program and serves as Principal Investigator for clinical trials including 'Inhibition of Sterile Inflammation by Digoxin' (HIC ID 2000025289). His clinical work encompasses comprehensive management of liver diseases with particular focus on fatty liver conditions and obesity-related metabolic disorders, utilizing the full spectrum of weight loss interventions from nutrition and medications to endobariatrics and surgical referrals.
He leads the Yale Fatty Liver Disease Program and Yale Metabolic Health and Weight Loss Program, working with multidisciplinary teams to advance understanding and treatment of metabolic liver diseases through both clinical care and research initiatives.
