Wade Winkler is a Professor at the University of Maryland, College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. He leads the Winkler Lab, which focuses on understanding bacterial regulatory RNAs and RNA-binding proteins. His research explores post-transcriptional mechanisms, particularly RNA degradation pathways and their roles in pathogenic microbes and antimicrobial development.
Winkler earned his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 2002 and completed postdoctoral training at Yale University in 2004. He teaches courses including Principles of Microbiology (BSCI283), Microbial Genetics (BSCI412), and Teaching Science and Professional Development (BISI701). His work integrates structural biology, biochemistry, and genetics to uncover novel regulatory circuits in bacteria.
Recent research highlights include studies on diribonucleotide-specific nucleases, RNA degradation bottlenecks, and bacterial microcompartment assembly. His lab’s findings contribute to synthetic biology applications and antimicrobial strategies.
