Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider

Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider is a Teaching Professor in the Computer Science department within the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois (UIUC). His work focuses on the intersection of systems, data, and educational tools, particularly through interactive data visualizations and educational technology. He is actively involved in teaching and developing innovative educational resources for students at UIUC and beyond.

Dr. Fagen-Ulmschneider's research interests center around data visualization systems and educational technology. He has developed numerous visualization tools including GPA Visualizations of UIUC data, Illinois LinkedIn Banner Generator, and Queue@Illini. His work demonstrates a strong commitment to making complex data accessible and engaging for students. Dr. Fagen-Ulmschneider is deeply committed to accessible education. His teaching includes CS/STAT/IS 107: Data Science DISCOVERY, CS 340, CS 423, CS 225, CS 105, and CS 241 at UIUC, as well as the Coursera MOOC "Object-Oriented Data Structures in C++" and related specializations. He believes education should be available and accessible, archiving his teaching materials online for broader access. His work on the Data Science DISCOVERY platform was selected as one of the campus-wide 2024 Investment for Growth projects at UIUC.

Through his d7: Data Science Research Collaborative, Dr. Fagen-Ulmschneider leads projects that explore engagement through data visualization systems. His tools, including the GPA Visualizations and Queue@Illini, have had significant impact across the campus community. He maintains an active presence in educational technology development, with numerous open-source tools that support student learning and engagement.
