W. James Potter is a Professor in the Department of Media and Digital Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on media effects, media literacy, and the sociology of knowledge. He has authored 29 books, including seminal works like Cognitive Theory of Media Literacy (2004), Digital Media Effects (2021), and the internationally best-selling Media Literacy (10th edition). He developed Lineation Theory in 2009 to synthesize media industry, content, and audience research into a unified framework.
Education includes dual Ph.D.s from Indiana University (Instructional System Technology) and Florida State University (Communication Theory and Research), along with a B.A. in English Literature from Pacific Lutheran University. His work has shifted from empirical studies to critiquing scholarly practices to improve research quality, resulting in over a dozen articles and books analyzing methodological shortcomings in media studies.
His research areas emphasize constructive critique of academic literatures, media industry dynamics, and the application of cognitive theories to media literacy education. He previously edited the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media and has been a vocal advocate for rigorous, impactful research methodologies.
