Prof. Dr. Volkhard Helms is a Professor of Bioinformatics at Saarland University's Center for Bioinformatics, where he has led the Computational Biology group since 2003. He also co-manages the center and holds the Chair of Computational Biology. Previously, he conducted postdoctoral research at UC San Diego and headed a junior biophysics group at the Max Planck Institute in Frankfurt.
His research integrates computational approaches to study:
- Protein-protein/DNA interactions and membrane transporter mechanisms
- Epigenetic influences on RNA splicing and cellular network dynamics
- Machine learning applications for biomolecular prediction tasks
Recent publications emphasize transporter substrate prediction using protein structure analytics. He collaborates extensively via SFB 1027, a multidisciplinary research hub.
Awards:
- EMBO Young Investigator (2001)
He teaches specialized courses in bioinformatics methods and advises students in computational biology research.
