Prof. Dr. Ludger Santen is a full Professor in the Department of Physics at Saarland University, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology. He leads the Research Group for Statistical Physics of Non-equilibrium and, as of April 1, 2024, serves as the President of Saarland University.
His research focuses on nonequilibrium statistical physics, with key interests in transport processes in biological systems (such as intracellular vesicle transport and cellular trafficking), phase transitions in disordered systems, and adsorption dynamics (including protein adsorption on surfaces like teeth). His work bridges theoretical physics and experimental biophysics, often involving collaborations with medical researchers.
Recent publications highlight groundbreaking work on the mechanics of motor proteins. A 2023 Nature Communications paper demonstrated that vesicles driven by opposing dynein and kinesin motors can reverse direction without biochemical regulators, challenging previous assumptions about intracellular transport control.
