Volker Witte was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology II at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) from 2004 to 2014. He held positions including substitute Professor for Behavioral Ecology and served as Akademischer Oberrat. His research focused on chemical ecology, behavioral ecology, and the application of insect social behavior to human contexts like business bionics. He habilitated in Zoology and Ecology in 2010.
Dr. Witte's work emphasized ant communication mechanisms, particularly pheromone systems, and their ecological implications. He studied invasive species dynamics, discovered novel ant species (e.g., Euprenolepis procera), and described species named after him (Euprenolepis wittei, Witteia dentilabrum). His research also explored co-evolutionary host-parasite dynamics and applied swarm intelligence principles to organizational management.
Notable achievements include the BMC Research Award (2011) for work on ant chemical integration. He trained numerous students through teaching and supervision of bachelor, master, and postgraduate projects. His interdisciplinary approach bridged basic ecological research with applications in business strategy and environmental management.
Volker Witte passed away in 2015, leaving a legacy of impactful work on ant communication and biodiversity conservation. His research group contributed significantly to understanding social insect behavior, invasive species control, and symbiotic relationships in tropical ecosystems.
