Volker Menze is an Associate Professor for Late Antique Studies at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. His research focuses on the intersection of religion, politics, and imperial authority in early Byzantium, particularly examining the legitimation of religious violence. Previously, he led Project D7 'Legitimation of Religious Violence and Imperial-Ecclesial Authorities in Early Byzantium' at the Cluster of Excellence 'Religion and Politics' from April to December 2009.
