Prof. Dr. Volker Depkat is a Professor of American Studies at the University of Regensburg, affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy. His research focuses on North American history, European-American relations, biography/autobiography studies, material culture in transatlantic contexts, and federalism. He leads the DFG-funded project 'Entangled Objects? The Material Culture of Diplomacy in Transcultural Processes of Negotiation in the 18th Century.' He currently supervises six doctoral candidates investigating topics ranging from Nicaragua solidarity movements to U.S. military perspectives on liberation.
He holds office hours in-person or via Zoom during the summer semester 2025, requiring prior email registration. His academic contributions include foundational work on transnational memory cultures and American Studies methodologies. His team collaborates with international institutions like the Hoover Institution and UC Berkeley through research exchanges.
Prof. Depkat’s research integrates visual and material culture analysis with historical biography, emphasizing transatlantic perspectives. His DFG project examines 18th-century British-Indigenous diplomacy through material artifacts.
