معرفی
Vladimir Saenko is an Associate Professor at the Department of Radiation Molecular Epidemiology, Atomic Bomb Disease Institute, Nagasaki University, Japan. With over 30 years of experience in molecular laboratory techniques, experimental design, and data analysis, he has established himself as a leading researcher in the field of radiation-related health effects and thyroid cancer.
Education
- 1995/01–1996/11: Postdoctoral Research Associate, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, USA
- 1994/06: PhD (biochemistry and immunology), Rostov State Medical Institute, Rostov-on-Don, Russia
- 1981/09–1987/02: M.S. [equivalent] in chemical engineering of biologically active substances, Lomonosov Institute of Fine Chemical Technology, Moscow, Russia
Research Interests
Dr. Saenko's research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of thyroid carcinogenesis with particular emphasis on radiation-induced cancers. His work spans multiple disciplines including molecular epidemiology, human genetics, and molecular pathology, with applications in radiation biology and cancer diagnostics.
His laboratory investigates the contribution of inherited genetic variations and somatic genetic alterations to the etiology of human cancer, particularly focusing on populations exposed to radiation in Chernobyl, Kazakhstan, and Japan. This research aims to improve public health through gaining new insights into gene-environmental interactions.
Recent Publications
Dr. Saenko's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on thyroid cancer epidemiology following nuclear accidents, with particular emphasis on comparative studies between Japan (Fukushima) and Ukraine/Belarus (Chernobyl). His work integrates molecular genetics with population-level epidemiological approaches, examining genetic markers like TERT promoter mutations and their prognostic value in thyroid cancer. The research spans both clinical applications and fundamental understanding of radiation-induced carcinogenesis.
Professional Activities
- Author and coauthor of 117 peer-reviewed articles, 2 books, and 9 book chapters
- Member of Editorial Board for 2 international journals
- Provides peer review service to 19 international journals
Teaching and Mentorship
Dr. Saenko has been actively involved in teaching since 2003, instructing courses on "Basics of Molecular Biology" for medical students at Nagasaki University, "Molecular Biology, Gene expression, Genomics and Biotechnology" for foreign students, and "Radiation and thyroid cancer" at Fukushima Medical University. He supervises students in both Master's and Doctoral programs, sharing his extensive expertise in radiation molecular epidemiology.
Research Focus
Dr. Saenko leads research investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying radiation-induced thyroid cancer, with particular attention to populations affected by the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear disasters. His work combines laboratory research with epidemiological studies to understand how radiation exposure interacts with genetic factors to influence cancer risk and progression.
