Dr. Vladimir Ruslan Wingate is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Geography, University of Bern, specializing in Land Systems and Sustainable Land Management. He previously held postdoctoral positions at the University of Zurich (2019-2021) and earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Basel in 2018. His academic background includes a Master's in Environmental Management from the University of Stirling (2011) and a Bachelor of Science in Tropical Environmental Science from the University of Aberdeen (2010).
- Current Role: PostDoc, Institute of Geography, University of Bern
- Previous Affiliations: University of Zurich (PostDoc 2019-2021), University of Basel (PhD 2018)
- Education: PhD (Geography), MSc (Environmental Management), BSc (Tropical Environmental Science)
Dr. Wingate's research focuses on remote sensing-based analysis of ecological change across tropical, arctic, and mountainous regions. His work develops quantitative change maps for deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity monitoring, with applications in natural resource management. Key methodologies include land surface phenology, hyperspectral imaging, and UAV LiDAR integration, particularly applied to fragmented forest systems in West Africa and Namibia.
- Research Themes: Deforestation analysis, Biodiversity conservation, Land-climate interactions
- Techniques: Satellite remote sensing, Near-surface sensing, Data fusion
His recent publications (2022-2025) emphasize West African tropical forest patches, UAV-based disturbance mapping, and multispectral data integration. Professional affiliations include the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) and participation in the GlobDiversity project (ESA-funded). Fieldwork spans Ghana, Madagascar, Namibia, and other regions across five continents.
- Projects: SUSTAINFORESTS, BioMonI, GlobDiversity
- Field Experience: Ghana, Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, Colombia, Switzerland, Scotland, Kyrgyzstan
