Vivian Hoffmann is an Associate Professor of Economics and Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University's Faculty of Public and Global Affairs, concurrently serving as Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit. She holds a PhD in Applied Economics from Cornell University and a B.A. from University of British Columbia.
Her research focuses on preventive health behaviors, agricultural technology adoption, and food safety systems in low-income countries. Key projects include randomized evaluations of agronomy training in Uganda and interventions improving meat safety practices in Kenya, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. She co-leads the CGIAR One Health Initiative addressing zoonotic disease risks.
Notable contributions include award-winning work on aflatoxin control in Kenya (2022 Agricultural Economics Best Paper) and studies on microcredit impacts in India and Ghana. Recent 2024 publications examine slaughterhouse hygiene in Kenya and food safety rating programs in Vietnam's pork markets.
Hoffmann advises multiple doctoral candidates and collaborates with international organizations like the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Her work bridges economic analysis with public health policy, emphasizing practical solutions to food safety and agricultural challenges in developing regions.
