Vivek Singh

Vivek Singh is an Associate Professor at the School of Communication and Information, Rutgers The State University of New Jersey, with a primary appointment in the Department of Computer Science. He directs the Behavioral Informatics Lab, which focuses on using information technology to model human behavior, predict mental health outcomes, and mitigate digital harms such as privacy loss and cyberbullying.

His research spans two major themes: AI for health and wellness, involving multimodal data (e.g., phone logs, social media) to study mental health and trust; and reducing harm in digital environments, including algorithmic bias, misinformation, and online incivility. His work has been recognized with the ASIS&T SIG-Social Media Senior Researcher Award (2024) and best paper awards at the ACM Web Science Conference (2024) and IEEE Intelligent Systems (2022).

Advising and Grants: He has advised students like Jinkyung Park, whose dissertation on online incivility reduction won a iSchool Doctoral Dissertation Award (Runner-Up). His lab has secured funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for projects such as the Rutgers Wellness Study (2021–ongoing) and covid-19 research grants, as well as a Google Research grant to study sensor-based information seeking behavior.

Labs and Teams: He leads the Behavioral Informatics Lab, which employs interdisciplinary approaches to design algorithms, interfaces, and frameworks that balance technological benefits with ethical considerations in digital environments.
