Bald's research centers on the understudied histories of South Asian migration to the United States, particularly focusing on early 20th century migrants from British colonial India who settled within communities of color. His work explores the intersections of race, migration, and cultural production, with special attention to how South Asian communities formed inter-ethnic connections with African American and Puerto Rican communities during periods of intense racial exclusion. His research methodology uniquely combines traditional archival work with digital media and documentary filmmaking to recover and present these marginalized histories.
Bald's publications and films reveal patterns in how marginalized communities navigate systems of exclusion while creating spaces for cultural expression and political resistance. His work demonstrates how historical narratives of migration challenge conventional understandings of American identity and belonging.
Bald has been actively involved in developing innovative approaches to documentary storytelling through digital media. His current transmedia project on early South Asian migration represents a significant contribution to both academic scholarship and public history, making complex historical narratives accessible through multiple media platforms.
As an educator, Bald teaches courses that bridge media studies, history, and digital production, including 'Communicating with Web-based Media' and 'The Social Documentary: Analysis and Production.' His work with the MIT Open Documentary Lab demonstrates his commitment to exploring new forms of documentary storytelling in the digital age.
