Vittorio Cuculo serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering "Enzo Ferrari" at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. He is an active member of the AImageLab research group under Prof. Rita Cucchiara and holds affiliations with the ACM and the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS Society). His interdisciplinary work bridges computer science, engineering, and cognitive sciences through human-centered AI applications.
Dr. Cuculo completed his Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Milan in 2017, where he co-founded the PHuSe Lab. His doctoral research established foundations in perceptual computing and human-computer interaction through immersive installations.
His primary research areas include Human Visual Attention (HVA), Affective Computing (AC), Remote Physiological Measurement (RPM), and Multimodal Human-Centered AI. These fields investigate how artificial intelligence interprets physiological and behavioral cues like eye movements and emotional states to enable natural human-computer interactions. Applications span healthcare diagnostics, cultural heritage preservation, and assistive technologies for neurodiverse populations.
Recent publications demonstrate technical innovation in gaze behavior analysis, featuring diffusion models for scanpath prediction and causal graphs for neurodivergent attention patterns. His Sanctuaria-Gaze dataset pioneers multimodal attention analysis in real-world religious contexts, highlighting cross-cultural applications of computer vision research.
Dr. Cuculo serves as Associate Editor for Springer Applied Intelligence and Area Chair for ACM Multimedia conferences. His upcoming role as Program Chair for IRCDL 2026 and Topic Editor for Frontiers in AI's special issue on Affect Analysis underscores his leadership in shaping research agendas across computer vision and human-AI interaction domains.
As a core member of AImageLab, he collaborates on European projects merging architecture, design, and digital technology. His industry background at dotdotdot studio informs practical implementations of perceptual computing, resulting in patented interactive installations and sustained partnerships with cultural institutions.
