Prof. Dr. Vito Francesco Gironda is a faculty member at the University of Bielefeld, affiliated with the Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology and the Department of History. He specializes in the History of Modern Societies and holds several important roles including Coordinator of the double degree Master in History Bielefeld-Bologna (BiBoG) since 2012, Rector's Representative for Relations with Italy since 2015, and Coordinator of the double degree Master "Global Cultures" Bielefeld-Bologna (Gloc) since 2020.
His educational background includes studies in history, literature and philosophy at the University of Bologna (Italy) and Bielefeld (Germany). He received his doctorate from the University of Bielefeld's Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology in 2007.
Prof. Gironda's research focuses on comparative social and political history of Western Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular emphasis on Italy, Germany, and France. His work explores themes of nationalism, citizenship, colonialism, political movements and ideologies, the history of democracy, and historiography. He serves as Editor of Storicamente, a journal of historical studies from the University of Bologna.

As an academic leader, Prof. Gironda has been instrumental in developing international academic partnerships between the University of Bielefeld and Italian institutions, particularly the University of Bologna. His work on double degree programs has strengthened academic exchange and collaboration between German and Italian historical scholarship. He also serves on the Teaching Commission of the Department of History and coordinates multiple module responsibilities including the Main module Modern and Profile module "Global Cultures".
