Vishvarani Wanigasekera is a Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford, affiliated with the FMRIB P.A.I.N Group and collaborating with Irene Tracey and Anaesthetic Neuroscience teams. Her research focuses on understanding how analgesics modulate neural activity in nociception and pain perception to optimize chronic pain treatment.
Her work addresses the variability in analgesic efficacy, particularly opioids, and investigates expectation-driven effects in clinical trials. Using functional neuroimaging, she studies pharmacological mechanisms and placebo/nocebo effects in pain and breathlessness, aiming to validate neuroimaging biomarkers for drug development. Key studies include exploring central sensitization in osteoarthritis and sertraline/placebo effects in breathlessness.
Recent publications examine neuropathic pain mechanisms and peripheral nerve excitability modulation. Her research contributes to patient stratification strategies and improving analgesic trial designs.
