Visa Immonen is a Professor of Archaeology at the University of Turku, Finland, and a faculty member at the University of Bergen, Norway’s AHKR (Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion) Department. His academic roles include Docent positions and visiting scholarships at Stanford University, the Bard Graduate Center, and the Getty Research Institute. His research focuses on cultural heritage studies, medieval archaeology, material culture, and gender studies. He directs the Academy of Finland-funded project 'Carving Out Transformations – Wood Use in North-Eastern Europe, 1100–1600' and integrates teaching with digital initiatives like a mobile app for urban archaeology.
Key research interests include heritage management, digitalization, and medieval Nordic material culture. Recent projects analyze LGBTQ heritage apps, queer heritage uses, and the impact of modernist church demolitions. Immonen has authored/co-authored over 200 publications, including books on medieval literacy, Hanseatic trade, and Finnish archaeological databases. His work bridges academic theory with public engagement, emphasizing heritage’s role in societal identity and spatial practices.
His career spans academic leadership, fieldwork in Turku, Espoo, and beyond, alongside contributions to global heritage debates. Current research explores heritage imagination, anticipatory grief in cultural loss, and the interplay between heritage and mobility. Immonen’s interdisciplinary approach integrates archaeology, digital humanities, and critical theory to address contemporary heritage challenges.
