Virgo Siil is a Junior Research Fellow in Sociology of Journalism at the Institute of Social Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tartu, Estonia. His research focuses on slow journalism, media trust, and the challenges facing contemporary journalism in the digital age, particularly within the Estonian context. He is currently pursuing a PhD on the feasibility of slow journalism in small countries under the supervisor Ragne Kõuts-Klemm.
His academic background shows active doctoral studies at the University of Tartu with research focused on slow journalism in small media markets. His scholarly trajectory demonstrates increasing specialization in journalism studies, particularly examining alternative journalistic models that prioritize quality over speed.
Siil's research primarily explores slow journalism as a response to the crisis of trust in media, examining how deliberate, thoughtful reporting can counteract the negative effects of fast-paced digital news consumption. His work investigates the sustainability of slow journalism models in small media markets like Estonia, analyzing both the challenges and opportunities these models present. Through detailed case studies of Estonian slow journalism outlets, he examines how these organizations build credibility, maintain financial viability, and develop distinctive journalistic practices that differentiate them from mainstream media. His research connects media sociology with practical journalism concerns, offering insights into how quality journalism can survive in the digital ecosystem.
His publication record shows a clear trajectory from examining sports journalism burnout (2017) to increasingly focusing on slow journalism as both a practical alternative and theoretical concept. Recent work analyzes how slowness can be leveraged to build trust in media, examining specific Estonian outlets as case studies. His research demonstrates how small countries face unique challenges and opportunities in developing sustainable slow journalism models.
