Virginie Guiraudon

Virginie Guiraudon is a CNRS research director at Sciences Po Center for European and Comparative Studies and a Visiting Professor in the Interdepartmental European Advanced Studies (IDEAs) program at the College of Europe. She holds a PhD from Harvard University (1997) and is a leading expert in European immigration and citizenship policies.

Guiraudon's research centers on the comparative politics of immigration and citizenship, the Europeanization of immigration, asylum, and border policies, and venue shopping in public policy. Her work has profoundly influenced the understanding of EU policy dynamics in these areas.

Her recent scholarship, including the 2017 article on the 2015 refugee crisis, demonstrates a consistent focus on policy inertia and institutional resilience in EU border control, spanning political science, European studies, and migration policy.

Awarded the Descartes-Huygens Prize and the ECPR Mattei Dogan Prize in European Political Sociology, her contributions are widely recognized.

She actively promotes European studies through leadership roles in EUSA, the Council for European Studies, and ESA, and co-founded the International Panel on Migration in 2018 to advance interdisciplinary migration research.
