Dr Virginia Madsen is a Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Radio at Macquarie University's School of Communication, Society and Culture, and Deputy Director of the Centre for Media History (CMH). She holds a Doctorate from UTS, a Bachelor of Media & Communications, and a Postgraduate Diploma in French from the University of Sydney. Her career includes radio broadcasting with ABC Radio National, where she produced award-winning documentaries and creative works archived internationally.
Her research focuses on radio history, documentary traditions, sound culture, and podcasting. Key projects include leading an ARC-funded study on ABC Radio National's history and an international account of radio documentary evolution across Europe, North America, and Australia. She teaches media studies, radio production, and podcasting, convening Masters and undergraduate units.
Her work spans academic writing, creative practice, and oral history projects. Notable outputs include publications on radio art, transnational documentary practices, and the role of music in public broadcasting. Awards highlight her contributions to both scholarship and audio artistry.
