Viola Vaccarino is the Wilton Looney Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Research at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Vaccarino earned her MD from the University of Milan and a PhD in epidemiology from Yale University.
Her research focuses on cardiovascular epidemiology, emphasizing social and behavioral determinants of disease, health disparities, and women’s health. Key areas include the interplay between psychological stress, mental health, and cardiovascular risk. She leads the T32 Multidisciplinary Research Training Program (METRIC) to reduce health inequalities.
Recent work addresses mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia, post-traumatic stress disorder’s cardiovascular impacts, and the role of psychosocial stress in women’s cardiovascular health. Her studies often integrate biomarkers, imaging, and longitudinal cohort data to understand disease mechanisms and disparities.
Dr. Vaccarino has contributed to American Heart Association guidelines on myocardial infarction in women and serves on editorial boards for high-impact journals. Her training programs emphasize mentoring underrepresented scholars in cardiovascular equity research.
