Viola Ago is an Assistant Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University's School of Interior Design, where she teaches architecture with a focus on conflict-affected territories. She directs MIRACLES Architecture, a practice exploring disorder and indeterminacy in design. Her research investigates the aesthetic and formal agency of destruction in war-torn areas, blending critical theory with architectural practice. Previously, she held fellowships at Rice University, Ohio State University, and the University of Michigan, and residencies at MacDowell and Autodesk’s Technology Center.
- Education: B.Arch.Sci. and M.Arch.
Her research interests emphasize the affective conditions of conflict zones, digital operations in architecture, and the interplay between materiality and spatial politics. Publications appear in Anyone Corp, John Wiley & Sons, Routledge, and ACADIA Conference Proceedings. Exhibitions include shows in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, and Columbus. Her work interrogates how architectural forms respond to societal duress through frameworks of indeterminacy and collapse.
Publications reflect a trajectory from robotic techniques (2013) to contemporary explorations of disorder and policy impacts (2022). Collaborations with figures like Thom Mayne and Jack Halberstam highlight her engagement with critical architectural dialogues.
