Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centerمعرفی
Vinod Balachandran, MD, serves as Associate Attending Physician, Associate Member, and Director of The Olayan Center for Cancer Vaccines at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). His work focuses on developing novel immunotherapies for pancreatic cancer—a disease notoriously resistant to conventional treatments—through reverse translation research bridging rare patient survivor studies and clinical applications. He leads a multidisciplinary lab within MSK's Department of Surgery and collaborates with the Immuno-Oncology Program and David M. Rubenstein Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
His educational background includes:
- MD from State University of New York at Stony Brook
Dr. Balachandran's research centers on leveraging the immune system to target pancreatic cancer through RNA neoantigen vaccines, tertiary lymphoid structure formation, and immunoediting mechanisms. His lab investigates how IL-33-activated ILC2s create protective immune microenvironments and how neoantigen quality influences long-term survival. This work directly informs clinical trials of personalized mRNA vaccines, aiming to overcome immunotherapy resistance by harnessing patients' natural immune responses against tumor-specific mutations.
Recent publications reveal a cohesive trajectory toward clinical translation: studies demonstrate sustained T cell activation via RNA vaccines (2025), ILC2-driven lymphoid neogenesis (2025), and neoantigen quality as a biomarker for immunoediting (2022). These findings highlight a paradigm shift from broad immunosuppression to precision immune stimulation, with multiple approaches now in early-phase human trials.
His accolades include:
- FNIH Trailblazer Prize for Clinical-Scientists (2023)
- Louise and Allston Boyer Young Investigator Award (2021)
- Pershing Square Sohn Prize (2020)
- Society of Immunotherapy for Cancer Presidential Award (2017)
- National Cancer Institute Cancer Moonshot Award (2017)
- Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award (2017)
- AACR/Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Career Development Award (2017)
- NCI Paul Calabresi Career Development Award (2016)
- Society of Surgical Oncology Harvey Barker Award (2015)
- David and Monica Gorin Fellow Award (2013)
- Memorial Sloan Kettering Chairman’s Award for Best Basic Science Research (2010)
- Society of University Surgeons Research Fellowship Award (2009)
- Alpha Omega Alpha
Dr. Balachandran mentors Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School PhD candidates including Emmanuel M. Bruno, Ella Serrano-Wu, Ashley Sullivan, and Linsey Zhang. His research is funded by major grants including the NCI Cancer Moonshot Award, Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award, and Pershing Square Sohn Prize, supporting high-risk/high-reward projects in cancer vaccine development and tumor immunology.
The Vinod Balachandran Lab comprises 13 current members including Research Scholars, Postdoctoral Fellows, and GSK PhD students, with strong ties to the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. Current priorities include expanding clinical trials of mRNA vaccines, optimizing ILC2-mediated immunotherapy, and developing biomarkers for patient stratification in pancreatic cancer immunotherapy.
