Vincenza Crupi is a Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences (MIFT) of the University of Messina, Italy. She has held academic positions at the University of Messina since 1995, progressing from research scholarships to her current role as Full Professor since 2014 and Coordinator of the PhD Program in Physics since 2019. Her academic career demonstrates steady progression through the ranks with significant leadership responsibilities including serving as Deputy Director of the MIFT Department from 2015-2018.
Professor Crupi earned her degree in Physics from the University of Messina in 1991 with honors (110/110), followed by a PhD in Physics in 1995. Her early career included research positions funded by the National Institute for the Physics of Matter (INFM) and the Regional Committee for Nuclear Research and the Structure of Matter (CRRNSM), focusing on vibrational dynamics and low-temperature calorimetry before advancing to permanent academic positions.
Her research spans four major interconnected areas: cooperative phenomena in hydrogen-bonded systems, hydration processes in polymers, dynamic properties of confined systems, and spectroscopic investigations in cultural heritage and medical physics. Professor Crupi employs a sophisticated multi-technique approach combining Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR absorption, neutron scattering, and X-ray fluorescence to investigate complex physical phenomena across different regions of the (k, omega) plane. This methodology enables comprehensive characterization of systems ranging from fundamental liquid state physics to applied pharmaceutical and cultural heritage contexts.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strategic expansion of her research program toward increasingly interdisciplinary applications. While maintaining her core expertise in spectroscopic analysis of complex systems, her work has grown to encompass environmental monitoring (particularly microplastics and radioactivity in water/food), advanced cultural heritage diagnostics, and biomedical applications of spectroscopic techniques. This evolution demonstrates her ability to adapt fundamental physics research to address pressing societal challenges.
Professor Crupi has held numerous significant service roles including membership on the National Commission for National Scientific Qualification, active participation in scientific committees for international conferences on archaeometry and hydrogen technology, and organization of educational initiatives such as the National School 'Science and Cultural Heritage – from Non-Invasive Analysis to 3D Reconstruction.' She serves as a research advisor for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students while teaching core physics courses and specialized spectroscopy methods for the PhD program.
Her research has been conducted in collaboration with major international facilities including Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK), Institut Max Von Laue-Paul-Langevin (France), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (France), and Laboratoire Léon Brillouin (France), demonstrating her integration into the global scientific community. With over 200 journal publications and a SCOPUS h-index of 33, her work has made substantial contributions to experimental physics and its applications.
