Vincent M. Southerland is an Associate Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU School of Law. He also serves as Executive Director of Washington Square Legal Services. Southerland holds a BA from the University of Connecticut, a JD from Temple University School of Law, and an LLM from Georgetown University Law Center.
His research focuses on racial justice, civil rights, and the criminal legal system, particularly the impact of predictive and surveillance technologies. He has led advocacy efforts on policing, school desegregation, and death penalty cases. Southerland teaches courses on criminal defense, reentry, and the intersection of race and the legal system.
His scholarship applies critical race theory to algorithmic tools in criminal justice. Recent publications include analyses of abolitionist ethics in public defense and oversight of surveillance technologies.
