Dr. Vincent Hai Du is an Assistant Professor in Filmmaking at the University of Sussex’s School of Media, Arts and Humanities. Specializing in documentary production, he has produced over 20 films for global platforms including Al Jazeera, BBC, NHK, and CCTV. His works focus on social issues in Asia, environmental crises, and cross-cultural narratives.
Education: MA in Screening Documentary from Goldsmiths, University of London (UK) and Master of Journalism from the University of Hong Kong (China). Proficient in English and Mandarin with academic peer-review capability in both languages.
Research interests span investigative journalism, activist media, and the intersection of documentary filmmaking with socio-political issues. His acclaimed documentaries include China’s Pet ‘Economy’ (Golden Nymph finalist), Smog Town (IDFA premiere), and Smuggling for Survival (Asian Academy Creative Award winner).
Recipient of prestigious film funds including Sundance Documentary Fund and IDFA Bertha Fund. Serves as film festival programmer (Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival 2021/2024) and jury member for Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards 2024. Teaches documentary theory/production, video journalism, and activist media at Sussex.
