Dr. Vina A. Lanzona is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and former Director of the Center for Philippine Studies (2011–2015). She specializes in modern Philippine and Southeast Asian history, with a focus on women’s roles in revolution, colonialism, and social structures. Her academic journey includes a BA from Ateneo de Manila (1989), an MA from the New School for Social Research (1994), and a PhD in Southeast Asian History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2000).
Her research explores themes such as women warriors in Southeast Asian revolutions, Philippine-Spanish colonial relationships, and Filipino involvement in the Spanish Civil War. Notable works include Amazons of the Huk Rebellion (2009) and the co-edited volume Women Warriors in Southeast Asia (2020), which analyze gendered experiences of conflict and resistance across historical contexts. She also teaches courses on Asian civilizations, Iberian colonialism, and women’s roles in political movements.
Her contributions to academic labor and institutional initiatives include participation in the History Forum and work with the Bentley World History Funds.
