Federico Magdalena

Federico Magdalena is a Faculty Specialist at the Center for Philippine Studies and a faculty affiliate at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Asian Studies Program. His expertise encompasses Mindanao history, Philippine society and culture, Islam in Southeast Asia, and globalization dynamics. Dr. Magdalena holds a Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii (1977), an M.A. from the University of the Philippines (1971), and a B.A. from Mindanao State University (1969).

His research focuses on unresolved historical conflicts in Mindanao, indigenous peacemaking traditions, and the intersection of globalization with cultural preservation. Key themes include Moro identity, colonial histories, and contemporary socio-environmental challenges in the Philippines. His courses explore peace processes, Islamic studies, and sociological change.

Publications span over four decades, addressing topics like Rizal's omissions of Moro narratives, pre-colonial folk narratives, and US colonial military campaigns. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary peacebuilding efforts, emphasizing cultural mediation frameworks.
