Prof. Viktor Umansky is a Professor in the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology at University Medicine Mannheim, affiliated with the Mannheim Medical Faculty. His research group investigates mechanisms of immunosuppression in melanoma microenvironments mediated by myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC). Key areas of focus include MDSC activation via IL-6 and CCR5/CCR5 ligand interactions, conversion of normal myeloid cells into MDSC through extracellular vesicle-mediated TLR signaling, and the role of MDSC subsets in metastasis. His work aims to improve melanoma immunotherapy outcomes by targeting MDSC pathways.
Research Contributions: Dr. Umansky has published extensively on MDSC biology in melanoma, including studies on microRNA transfer, TLR4 signaling in immunosuppression, and predictive biomarkers for immunotherapy. His interdisciplinary approach combines preclinical models (e.g., RET transgenic mice) with clinical samples from immunotherapy patients to bridge basic science and translational research.
Lab & Collaborations: His team collaborates with institutions like DKFZ (German Cancer Research Center) through the Clinical Cooperation Unit for Dermato-Oncology. Current projects emphasize therapeutic strategies targeting MDSC and understanding resistance mechanisms to immune checkpoint inhibitors.
