Viktor Pekar is a Senior Lecturer in Operations and Service Management at Aston Business School, part of the College of Business and Social Sciences at Aston University. He holds a PhD in Computational Linguistics from Bashkir State University (Russia) and has extensive industry experience as a Chief NLP Engineer in startups and at Oxford University Press. His research focuses on predictive modeling, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), computational social sciences, and social media analysis, with over 40 publications in top conferences/journals. He teaches modules like Machine Learning for Business Analytics and Programming for Data Analytics, and has led the MSc Business Analytics program since 2022.
Key roles include Programme Director for MSc Business Analytics (full-time and online), and academic leadership in curriculum design and student supervision. He has supervised multiple DBA/PhD dissertations, including studies on machine learning in internal audit and plagiarism detection. Awards include the Maxwell Fry Fellowship (2016) and EU INTAS Young Scientists Scholarship (2002). He actively contributes to editorial boards of journals like Nature Communications and Natural Language Engineering, and serves on the ESRC Peer Review College.
Research interests span social media analytics for disaster detection, consumer behavior prediction, and ESG firm performance. His work bridges academic and industry applications, with projects involving startups and organizations like Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.
