Vigdis Ruud serves as Associate Professor of Interior Architecture at Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHIO), where she has been affiliated since 2006. She currently teaches and supervises students at Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels within the Interior Architecture program under the Academy of Fine Arts.
Her educational background includes a 1986 diploma from the Norwegian School of Arts and Crafts (KHIO). Professional experience spans over three decades, including positions at Scenario Interiørarkitekter (1987-1995) and her own practice in partnership with prominent architectural firms like Jarmund/Vigsnæs and Lund Hagem Arkitekter.
Ruud's research explores the narrative potential of color and materiality in spatial design. Her recent work examines how chromatic elements function as storytelling devices within interiors, investigating the psychological and cultural dimensions of color perception. She maintains strong connections between academic research and professional practice, particularly in public space interventions and furniture design.
Her publication record shows consistent output focused on spatial theory and design methodology since 2008, with increasing emphasis on color theory culminating in the significant 2023 work 'Colors as Storytellers'. The publications demonstrate an evolving trajectory from practical case studies toward more theoretical explorations of spatial experience.
Ruud has contributed to notable projects including the redesign of Oslo City Hall (2005, 2008), where she created ceremonial furniture elements that integrate textile and wood craftsmanship within institutional architecture. Her professional practice encompasses concept development, design implementation, and follow-up for commercial and hospitality interiors.
As former subject manager for the Interior Architecture and Furniture Design program (2008-2012), she has significantly shaped curriculum development while maintaining active professional engagement through her architectural practice.
