Dr. Victoria G. Harrison is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography at San José State University (SJSU), holding the rank of Lecturer AY-B. She has been affiliated with SJSU since 2006, contributing to interdisciplinary programs such as the MUSE (Multidisciplinary Upper-Division Studies) program and coordinating the Jewish Studies Program. Prior to SJSU, she served as a professor of English at UC Santa Barbara, focusing on American literature, women’s literature, and Jewish literature. She authored a book on Elizabeth Bishop’s poetry published by Cambridge University Press. Her academic career also includes roles as a high school English teacher and webmaster.
Education: She earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Rutgers University Newark Campus in 1998. Her teaching and research interests span modern Jewish identity, secularization, and cultural studies, as evidenced by her coordination of courses like JWSS/HUM/HIST 111: Jews and Popular Culture. She currently teaches courses that integrate literature, history, and cultural theory to explore Jewish identity in modern contexts.
Professional Activities: Dr. Harrison’s course materials emphasize the intersection of Jewish culture with popular arts, including film, music, and literature. She has organized syllabi that analyze secular Jewish identity through works by Spinoza, Kafka, and modern artists.
