Victoria Butterby is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Sociology at Durham University. She joined the university in 2019 following the completion of her PhD, which focused on loss in the lives of young people known to youth justice services. She also works part-time with Durham Law School, supporting impact and engagement initiatives. Her research and practice span violence, abuse, and safeguarding, with a particular emphasis on youth experiences and developmental contexts.
Research Interests: Victoria’s work intersects several fields, including:
- Youth justice and trauma
- Domestic abuse dynamics, particularly economic and image-based abuse
- Contextual Safeguarding in non-traditional environments (e.g., hospitality sector)
- Education and practitioner-led action research
- Policing in schools and adolescent-sensitive safeguarding approaches
- Supporting neurodivergent individuals in domestic abuse perpetrator programs
Projects and Collaborations: She contributes to Durham’s Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA) and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams. Notable projects include Everybody’s Business (with McDonald’s UK) and neurodivergent-focused domestic abuse guidance development.
