Victoria Bazin

Victoria Bazin is a Lecturer in American Studies at Northumbria University, joining in 1996. Her academic journey includes a PhD from King’s College London, MA in English Literature at King’s College London, and a first degree in American Studies with a year at the University of Minnesota. She previously held teaching positions at Middlesex University (1990-1992) and the University of East Anglia during her PhD studies (1992-1996).

Bazin’s research focuses on 20th-century women’s writing, feminist periodicals, and cultural intersections of literature and economics. Her monograph on Marianne Moore and edited special issues on women and aging reflect her analytical engagement with gender, modernism, and media.

Her recent articles examine activist magazines like Red Rag and Spare Rib, situating feminist discourse within broader socio-economic frameworks, including critiques of capitalism, editorial practices, and periodical culture from suffrage to second-wave feminism. Key themes include advertising feminism, gendered labor, and mediated representations of women.

Bazin supervises PhD students Georgia Dalton (on British feminist theatre, 2023) and Melissa Tyrrell (on Jessie Redmon Fauset and Black periodicals, 2022). Her work bridges literary scholarship with feminist historiography, emphasizing transatlantic and interdisciplinary connections.
