Research Focus
Dr. Szabo's interdisciplinary scholarship examines music through historical, theoretical, and cultural lenses. His primary research explores electronic music evolution, ambient genre development, DJ culture, and psychedelic influences in music. Current book research investigates the intersection of club music DJing practices with psychedelic aesthetics. Additional interests include music psychology, identity formation through sound, and cultural representations in popular/film music.
Publication Themes
His scholarship consistently analyzes ambient and electronic music through sociocultural frameworks. Recent works demonstrate strong focus on genre historiography, racial dynamics in music subcultures, analytical methodologies for electronic compositions, and critical reappraisals of foundational figures like Brian Eno. Publications reflect sustained engagement with music as cultural practice and identity marker.
Student Engagement
Dr. Szabo actively mentors student research in areas including: music-mood relationships, rave subculture history, genre formation theories, and electronic music production. He welcomes collaboration on his current book project concerning psychedelic influences in DJ practices.

Beyond academia, he contributes to campus life as faculty advisor for Tiger Radio and maintains active electronic music DJing and production pursuits.
